Celebrating Gratitude at Damien’s Christmas Tree Lighting

Last week, the Damien High School community gathered for our Annual Christmas Tree Lighting, a cherished tradition that marks the start of the holiday season. This year’s event was particularly moving as we unveiled a gift from Jim (Class of 1969) and Tom (Class of 1970) Kelly, honoring the enduring legacy of their parents, Margaret and James Kelly, who sacrificed greatly to provide their children with the blessings of a Catholic education.

President Dr. Joe Siegmund ‘86 spoke eloquently about the impact of this gift, recognizing the lifelong achievements of Jim Kelly and Tom Kelly and the values instilled in them by their parents.

“This gift memorializes the sacrifices Margaret and James made to provide their children with the gift of knowledge and faith,” Dr. Siegmund said.

The highlight of the evening was the heartfelt remarks by Tom Kelly, who shared vivid memories of his time at Damien and the gratitude he feels toward his parents.

“They were children of Irish immigrants, and to part with anything for any purpose was a dear party, because there wasn’t all that much to part with,” Kelly said. “But they saw the importance of finding a place where their children would gain an academic foundation always encapsulated in faith.”

Tom reflected on traditions that shaped his time at Damien, from saying the rosary before and after games to lessons of humility instilled during his freshman year. He encouraged the students in attendance to embrace the Advent season as a time of waiting and gratitude.

Jim and Tom’s generous donation—commemorated as a plaque at the Grotto of Jesus and Mary—recognizes their parents and all parents who sacrifice for the gift of education and faith.

“This plaque isn’t just for my parents. It honors all parents who give the gift of learning and faith through their sacrifices,” Kelly said.

As the Christmas tree illuminated the quad, so too did the gratitude of everyone gathered. This year’s Christmas Tree Lighting was a celebration of generosity, family, and the deep connections that define the Damien community. It reminded all of us to cherish the sacrifices that have shaped our lives and inspired us to carry forward the light of faith and learning into the future.
